Just 10 miles from the Crown Spa Hotel is Ganton Golf Club, in the Vale of Pickering between York and Scarborough, ranks among the very best of Britain's inland courses. It has played host to any number of amateur and professional tournaments.
The course is laid out on quiet undulating heathland which with a sandy subsoil is very freedraining. The fairways are predominantly bents and fescues, which provide a firm base for all well executed shots. Ganton puts a premium on accuracy rather than length.
Impenetrable gorse abounds within the open nature of the heathland. There are few trees other than those on the boundaries; with plenty of space the original open character of the terrain has been retained. As to the bunkers, Ganton has few peers; the player who is bunkered is punished for his error.
Gary Player once said that Ganton is the only inland course worthy of holding the Open Championship. It provides a relentless test for those aspiring to the greatest achievements in the game; the fast running fairways and the firm true greens require the highest quality of shot making and control.
Dress: Monday to Friday up to 4.00 p.m. smart casual wear is allowed in the men's bar. In all other Club Rooms jackets and ties or cravats must be worn. Jeans, collarless shirts, anoraks and training shoes are not permitted at anytime in the Club House or on the course. If shorts are worn while playing, they must be tailored and full length stockings with turnover tops must be worn.
